Probably most well known of all Bomber Command stations, Scampton is located partly on the site of a First World War landing ground known as Brattleby or Brattleby Cliff. Located four miles north of Lincoln, the first of several airfields built on the rise known as the Lincoln Cliff running north on the west side of the A15, the original station opened in 1916.
With the expansion of the RAF to meet developments in Germany, during the 1930s the Air Ministry turned first to abandoned First World War landing grounds when looking to build the required new airfields. Compulsorily purchased in 1935, work took the best part of two years and the RAF appeared before completion. The camp area was placed in the south-east corner and accessed from the A15 which formed the eastern border of the station. Substantial flat-roofed, brick buildings predominated and four Type C hangars were erected. The weapons stores were further north on the eastern side of the airfield.
The airfield is modelled as it may have looked in 1940 with 49 and 83 Squadrons equipped with Handley Page Hampdens in residence.
In 1940 Scampton was a grass airfield with a hard perimeter track and 'banjo' hardstandings. Hard runways were not laid down until September 1943. The main runway is equipped with a 'flarepath' for night landings.
Coincidently one of 83 Squadron's pilots at Scampton in 1940 was one Guy Penrose Gibson destined to return to Scampton in 1943 as Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson to lead 617 Squadron on the Ruhr dams raid.
An unprototypical NDB is included as an aid to navigation.
Hampden statics of both squadrons are parked on the hardstandings around the airfield.
A simple flight plan is included utilising the included Team SDB Hampden model, which puts one Hampden in the circuit performing Touch and Go landings.
Original Hampden source file by kind permission of Alphasim Ltd extensively reworked by Team SDB as an AI.
Static aircraft paints by Frank Safranek.
Simmers wanting to portray Scampton in it's "Dambusters" days with Lancasters can simply delete the egxp_statics.bgl and the flightplan file and replace with your own.
